On 20 November 2021, a multi-cultural, multi-generational cast of 20 will give two performances of the piece at 19:00 and 20:30. Maryland is described by the playwright Lucy Kirkwood as ‘a howl of rage’, written at great speed to try to express in dramatic form how she – and so many others – feel about a culture of violence against women.

After anextended sell-out run at London’s Royal Court in October 2021, this astonishing, visceral cry of fury has been made temporarily available for script-in- hand performance across the UK.

Helen Trew, Co-director of Art27scotland, said: ‘We are thrilled to be able to facilitate these performances, ensuring that this important piece is seen here in Edinburgh.’

Vicky Featherstone, Director of the Royal Court, describes the play as showing ‘the world back to us in a way that momentarily stops us feeling so alone, so fearful, so lost. There is order. There is hope. This is what this enormous, tiny play does.’

This Edinburgh production of Maryland is being directed by Hilary Spiers. Hilary is a novelist, award-winning short story writer and playwright, who writes about ordinary women in sometimes extraordinary circumstances.

Maryland runs for approximately 30 minutes. The performances will be socially distanced, and all attendees are required to wear masks throughout their visit. Tickets cost £5 (including £0.98 booking fee) and all proceeds (excluding booking fee) will go to the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre on the night.

About Art27scotland

Art27scotland is an Edinburgh-based non-profit Community Interest Company. It is inspired by Article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that ‘Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, and to enjoy the arts.’ Art27scotland is focused on exploring the powerful and sometimes conflicting relationship between our shared human and cultural rights.

Art27scotland is distinctive in Scotland, as it articulates global shared experiences through its locally-based international Artists in Residence. It aims to celebrate our connectedness to the rest of the world and develop empathy, listening and learning from others’ lived experience. It wants to share this exchange through art in order to stimulate broader democratic discussion and exchange relating to the rights of artistic expression, cultural participation and cultural democracy.

Art27scotland is part of the Culture Collective and funded by Creative Scotland.
